How to become a model in India.

Every year, thousands of young Indians dream of a modelling career. Very few know what the first honest step actually looks like. This guide is written with our top-booked CastingHub models, casting directors and agents — no upsell, no fluff. Just the exact path from “I think I could model” to a signed, paid booking.

01. What modelling actually is

Modelling in India is not one job — it is a stack of very different careers that share the same word. Runway modelling in Mumbai and Delhi is a small, elite niche. Editorial modelling for Vogue, Elle and Grazia is even smaller. The commercial market — e-commerce shoots, catalogue work, brand campaigns, influencer collaborations, event ramp — is where 90% of working models earn their income, and it is also the segment that is exploding right now thanks to D2C brands and OTT productions.

Before you spend a rupee on portfolios or classes, decide honestly which of these you want. The height, look, portfolio and rate expectations are completely different for each.

02. Honest self-assessment

Traditional agencies still filter for height (5'9"+ for women, 5'11"+ for men) for runway and high-fashion, but commercial, fitness, plus-size, lifestyle and influencer segments are wide open. Skin, hair and body-fat percentage matter less than consistency, professionalism and how you photograph. The single strongest predictor of success we see across 10,000+ CastingHub profiles isn't looks — it's reliability: showing up on time, taking direction, and treating every ₹5,000 shoot like a ₹5,00,000 campaign.

03. Build your first portfolio

Your portfolio is your CV. You need 12–20 strong images across four buckets:

  • Clean headshots — natural light, no heavy make-up, minimal expression.
  • Full-length body shots — front, side and back, plain wall, natural light.
  • Two editorial-style looks — showing range and styling ability.
  • One or two lifestyle / motion frames — smiling, walking, candid.

You do not need a ₹40,000 studio portfolio to start. A collaborative “TFP” (time-for-print) shoot with a serious photography student, plus one paid session later, is enough for your first six months. Upload everything to yourCastingHub profile— it doubles as a public, shareable portfolio URL with a QR code and downloadable comp card.

04. The comp card

A comp card (composite card) is the industry-standard, single-page PDF a casting director looks at first. It carries one headshot, three–five body shots, your measurements and contact. CastingHub generates a print-ready comp card automatically the moment your profile is verified.

05. Do you need an agency?

Ten years ago, an agency was the only door. Today, the top three ways to get booked in India are, in order: verified marketplaces like CastingHub, Instagram, and traditional agencies. Agencies are still valuable for high-fashion runway and international placements, but they take 20–40% commission and typically expect exclusivity. For commercial work, going direct through a verified marketplace keeps 100% of your negotiating power.

06. Auditions and self-tapes

Most Indian castings are now self-tape first. Learn to shoot a clean 60-second tape: neutral wall, natural light, phone at eye-level, slate (name, height, city) at the top, one walk, one turn, one expression. Nail this and you'll clear the first round of 80% of castings on CastingHub.

07. How much do models earn in India?

Real 2026 numbers, based on CastingHub bookings across 250+ verified talent:

TierDay rateTypical work
New face₹4,000–₹8,000E-commerce, catalogue
Working₹10,000–₹25,000Brand campaigns, ramp
Established₹35,000–₹1,00,000National campaigns, editorial
Top-tier₹1,50,000+Celebrity endorsements, films

08. Red flags to avoid

Never pay an “agency” for a portfolio, an audition slot, an “audition kit”, a training course as a precondition, or an application fee. Legitimate agencies and platforms earn only when you earn. On CastingHub, every booking is escrow-secured — payment is held safely and released only after the shoot is complete, so you never chase money.

09. Your first paid booking

The realistic path in your first year: create a verified profile, upload 12–20 images, complete two or three TFP shoots, apply to five castings a week on CastingHub, and treat every ₹4,000 e-commerce booking as your audition for the next brand campaign. Talent who follow this loop see their first paid booking within 4–6 weeks.

10. The 90-day checklist

  1. 01Create a free verified CastingHub profile with 12+ portfolio images.
  2. 02Generate your comp card PDF and share your public profile URL.
  3. 03Shoot one self-tape template you can reuse for auditions.
  4. 04Apply to 5 castings a week for 12 straight weeks.
  5. 05Track every response, and refine images every 30 days.
  6. 06Bank your first booking with escrow-secured payment.
